Notes About the Song:

The lyrics were not intended to foreshadow/portray a romantic relation between Steve and Alex although some of the lyrics resemble the words of a marriage vow. This just shows the strength of their alliance and friendship. I wanted to steer away from portraying a romantic relationship because it does not reflect the nature of Minecraft.

 Most people want electronics, shoes, gifts for others, or coats on black Friday. I want the fish in the above picture, which is the gold dojo loach. I'll get three of them from a local Petco--and you can choose the names. I will list six and the three most voted will be my name choices. Today upon a bus I saw a lovely maiden with golden hair;

I envied her—so beautiful, and how, I wished I were so fair;

When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle;

She had one foot and wore a crutch,

but as she passed, she wore a smile

My faith teacher read this poem to us in class and I had a real problem with it. It draws too much on the idea of inherent lack in people with disabilities. The descriptions of the featured disabilities are generally pitiful. One of my classmates mentioned that it would be awkward to read this if a blind student was in our class. In the poem, the persona says "I am blessed indeed. \ The world is mine." Can we not also claim the world as ours too with the abilities we have? 

However, I kept in mind that this is the view of a typical person lacking in understanding of the disability world. They were probably taught to pity, so I mostly went with it. I still found it unsettling because it implies that people with disabilities don't have anything to be grateful for. I find this idea to be untrue, even oppositional to the idea of diversity. For example, I'm sure that amputees are infinitely grateful for their prosthetics and the technology needed to create them. Adaptive devices are empowering, not pitiful. 

The Bible says that God uses people and their disabilities to do His works. Whether that is a miracle of Jesus, an example set through a person, or a model of value of human life is up to God. God is all-knowing and good; thus, he has a plan that will work for the good of all and the individual. Sometimes, what seems like a curse is a mercy in disguise. I don't know where I would be if I wasn't autistic, but I wouldn't be the nonconformist, perception changer, or overall person I am now.

Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Exodus 4:11 

Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. John 9:3

I am grateful for...

...the salvation Jesus gave through His death and resurrection, which I accept as the Bible tells it and only as the Bible tells it. Without it, I would be doomed to fall into eternal fire and brimstone. If you are not a Christian, do not leave hate comments. I respect your right to believe what you do, but please respect mine as well.

...the resource program at my school that enables me to excel to my full potential. With the services, I feel like I can climb higher without fear of crashing.

...this amazing, diverse, and accepting blogger community. I, being one of the youngest bloggers to contribute to the linkup, feared being shunned due to my age. 

...the good food, adequate shelter, fresh water, loving family, and other basic things I take for granted so often. 

...my autism. I know it seems like a bizarre thing to be thankful for, but bear with me. Without it, I wouldn't be the diversity-loving nonconformist I am today. It helps me to put into perspective that there is no real "normal" standard for human beings. Normal is mundane, boring, overdone, average, run-of-the-mill, and unexceptional. I want to defy the norm, change perceptions, and help to form more positive opinions about autism, disability, and being human as a whole.

...music. I have always loved music and seventh grade was when I worked up the courage to take up an instrument. I knew someone would look down on me for starting late, but I knew that haters would hate. It made me more confident and pushed me to actually thrive. 

...the Internet. It's a world in and of itself where people exchange, debate, and spread ideas. It's a powerful tool to utilize, so use it wisely!

...biology lessons. I'm surprised that people think this class is boring when this is life. This is what makes you, well...you!!! It's amazing how complex cellular respiration is when it creates ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the main source of energy in cells. If you have ever slept through a lesson on cell division, think about this. Skin is never more than a few months old. Without cell division, you wouldn't have new skin. That means your cuts and other injuries would never heal completely or properly. 

...freedom of speech. Without freedom of speech, I would live in fear if I disagreed with the government. 

...the ideas of kindness, acceptance and diversity. Without them, where would this community--or anyone, for that matter, be?

The Airplane

Just Some Special Needs Lifehacks

A "lifehack" is a creative way to avoid a small inconvenience in life. I decided to come up with some to share with everyone.

1.      Use facial tissue to create makeshift earplugs. This is effective for fireworks shows.
2.     Carabiner clips on backpacks keep lunchboxes from getting lost.
3.     A TI 83 Plus can serve as an impromptu communication device for someone who relies of typing. 
4.     Use the Stickies application on an Apple computer to record schedules and appointment times.
5.      A colorful fabric scrap can serve as the buffer between a bothersome medical ID  bracelet and skin.
6.     Hard/chewy candies make a great source of oral stimulation in environments where food is allowed.
7.  Use a plastic folder to keep homework together.
8.      Use a jump ring with index card-sized captioned pictures to make an inventory of social stories.
9.     Laminate your explanation cards with plastic wrap and tape to make them waterproof. Plastic wrap can also serve as a temporary, but low-cost iPad screen protector.
10.  Edamame is green, protein-packed, and has little flavor. This soybean is easy to chew and squeezing those slippery beans out of the pod increases pincer grip skills. It might serve your reluctant eater well as a healthy snack.

These lifehacks are merely a list of things that work for me. This is not intended to promote any therapy regimen or lifestyle.

This is Why I Joined Band

A Foreword: This is not a how-to. Everyone who has ever been in band has had their own strategy to thrive musically and make friends. Band made a difference in my life. It made more confident and gave me something to be proud of. If band stuff, acceptance, or having a passion offends you, I strongly suggest that you go somewhere else. If "it's just band", then "it's just football, soccer, bouldering, lacrosse, video gaming, choir," or whatever your passion is. This post is for anyone who helped me thrive musically, my friends, my enemies, and interested random third parties with varying degrees of connection to band culture, but it's mostly for me. Being a reflection of personal feelings and experiences, it does not inherently reflect the feelings of band culture as a whole. No story of finding one's passion is typical, so do not expect these results.

First of all, I never planned to be in band. I wanted to be in living skills because I knew it would be practical later. I listed band as an alternate because I have always wanted to play a wind instrument. It would be an achievement that not everyone else can say they have. Little did I know that would be my passion.

The Story
When the time came to choose my instrument, I tried many and produced a successful sound out of all of them. I was attracted to the euphonium, but then remembered I would need to carry it around with me. The clarinet seemed  like a suitable choice, but I did not want the hassle of reeds and the squeaking is horrendous. I settled on the flute, which seemed to suit me the most. It was the most convenient to carry, easy to clean, and the least expensive of the options, but I mainly loved its sound. That pure, resonant ring stood out from the rest and I knew that was what I wanted. I was the only flutist for a short time and I liked that way. When another flutist joined the band, it was upsetting and disorienting for me. I felt like my individuality was stripped away. She did not know my xenophobic tendencies, so my reaction confused her. I eventually warmed up to the new member after the feelings faded. Band is definitely for me, I thought as I decided to ascend to the next musical level.

Before a band competition, I had fun with my best friend at SeaWorld San Diego. We rode Manta nine times and ate candy beads from tubes. Aside from being stuck with unfamiliar people, it was a great experience. Being Divergent fans, we felt "dauntless" after riding. After what seemed like a fleeting moment, we ate dinner. It consisted of Mexican food swimming in cheese. We ate around the cheese and scraped it off. She liked the beef taco and I liked the chicken enchilada. After sleeping in a hotel, the day of the competition came. After performing Rites of Tamburo and A Cowboy Life, the band received a silver rating. It was an improvement from last year, but we still wanted the gold!!! Friendly competition spurred my passion for band yet again.

Now, I am in marching band and I love it so far. Who knows where the winds of music will take me? I might end up as a band director, music teacher, or have a non-musical career while pursuing the flute as a hobby.

Being in band made me more confident and it gave me something to own and be proud of. Not everyone can say that they play a musical instrument and march with it. I have embraced the challenges wholeheartedly ever since day one. In band, I'm not the shy autistic girl. I'm the brave, bold, and spirited self-advocate who never fails to play strong and play on. I memorized all my major scales, some in one octave, and some in two. I successfully auditioned for a non-school band and plan to make friends and memories with the flute section and a few others.       

Jiro Ono from the film Jiro Dreams of Sushi says "You must fall in love with your work" and so far I feel like I have. I don't mind the long hours of band camp that require me to eat an early dinner or how practice cuts into other things. It is the life I have chosen and I will embrace it. Some may say things like "Get over it, band geek", "You're being ridiculous", or "It isn't that hard," but I will brush those comments off. If they had a passion, they would understand how fulfilling it is to work hard at something you love. When I first joined band, I had trouble supporting my flute for more than 20 seconds. Now, I can hold it for an entire 3-4 minute song while marching. This increase in endurance may seem insignificant, but it means the world to those in a musical field. Contrary to what science would say, playing music is not just producing pleasing sound patterns. When I play in band, I feel the vibration in the ground from bass instruments and percussion, the resounding melody in my head, and the harmony tie it all together by filling the rest of me with sensation. During marching, I also feel my footsteps, smell the astroturf, and feel the soreness from jumping jacks, running, laps, and other kinds of warm ups. It is the hardest thing I have done, but I continue to love it.

I never realized I wanted to be in band until there was no going back. I look at the whole "band geek/nerd" thing as something to embrace and flaunt. It taught me to be a better self-advocate. I never had a reason to join band, but I have many reasons to stay.

Inclusion Symbolism in July 4 2014 Google Doodle

Have you ever been told to be normal? That you are too low functioning, weird, slow, or making excuses? That if you don't learn the "correct" way you can't learn at all? I think this Google doodle will open some minds with the symbolism I found in it.

Synopsis (spoiler alert): An avid young flutist marched excitedly in the parade, but a smaller stride proved disadvantageous among the more experienced musicians.On top of that ,the young musician attempted to play the piccolo holding it like an inline instruments. Each note from their instrument lead to him/her stumbling. Frustrated, s/he used all of their air to produce a note, only to fall flat. The flutist blew another pitiful note hoping to have his/her efforts recognized. A trumpet player, apparently the band's leader, inspired the flutist to play their piccolo the way they should and lead the band. 

The flutist represents someone with special needs/a disability/(insert preferred term here). A shorter stride means they have to work harder to stay in step with the rest of the band.

Holding the piccolo early in the parade represents the "correct" way of learning, which obviously did not work for the flutist. It set him/her up for failure.

The trumpet player represents friends, teachers, therapists, parents, and other supportive people. This musician's genuine kindness inspired the flutist to play a solo and lead the band.

Holding the piccolo during the solo represents success after receiving appropriate accommodations and services along with general support.

The parade represented a mainstream environment and its members represented typical people.

Don't force the flutists of the world to play their instrument like a trumpet.
