Ever since the day I started to sing,
Soprano vocalists were popular.
But I never thought a day would come
When I would be one of them.
And that's another problem that I have,
People assuming that my singing's bad
Because most songs extend too high for me.
Do people know that my range starts
At B2, not C4?
And do people get that
There's other ranges too?
Even altos go unknown
In the hype of higher range.
And you know I won't strain
Just to sing beyond my range.
What am I going to have to do
To get all this through?

Which I totally understand, I completely get, Friend.... Many of Bruce Springsteen's songs reflect my thoughts, feelings and emotions in a profound, personal fashion!! ;)
That being mentioned. I cannot sing high notes.... And I'm a girl!! I used to be able to sing somewhat high notes {like Ariel from "The Little Mermaid"} but then I was afflicted with pneumonia at age 21. For reasons beyond my comprehension, I have not been able to sing high notes ever since.... I run out of breath!! Do not worry about other people's expectations for you.... ;)

It's a humorous rant. Nothing killed my vocal range. I'm just a tenor. Doing vocal exercises for the contralto are high for me.

I can't sing high notes either, my voice cracks when it gets too high. I used to be able to but when I was 13 my vocal cords became severely paralyzed to the point I couldn't breath because of a virus and after two years it has resolved to a unique vocal tick but even that doesn't happen often anymore :D

It's still fairly extensive - more than an octave I do believe?
Ah - it's easy sometimes to feel down with melisma and whistle registers and such things becoming part of the singing/vocal toolkit.

I am one who has a fairly low and soft voice.
@Raelyn: wholly agree about humour and its means.
Aaron Likens wrote a great post about humour and the way he presents it. Liked it because it was very similar to mine. [especially how others perceive it as "dry" and Aaron and I see it as "reality" - I think our "realities" may overlap].
Pharangytis may have killed any singing ability or development during my late teens and early 20s. Then in my mid-20s my temporal lobe was working better and I was able to sing more accurately and more in tune.
I only sing ceremonially and in routinised situations [for example the National Anthem and Christmas carols - also sporting chants]. Spontaneously I sing songs of the 1990s and very often in and out of key.
@Meredith: I don't know that my own voice cracks when I sing "high" notes.

DeleteRobert Downey Jr. is the one who taught me {by his example and through my keen Sherlock Holmes-like observation ;) } that during hard times, a sense of humor can get us through Life!! Ah, RDJ.... I believe that during Robert's years as an addict, it was his sense of humor--plus God's grace and being hard to kill--that helped save him.... ;-D
